James Cook University in Queensland offers an excellent full medicine course with a 6-year undergraduate Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) degree.

Their medicine programme will expose you to treating and addressing health issues faced by rural, remote, urban, tropical, and Aboriginal communities. James Cook University currently has 6 campuses – medical students will be based in Townsville for the first 3 years. The course allows you to live across Australia spending the last 3 years in Cairns, Mackay and Darwin.

JCU graduates become part of a community of doctors that can access, understand, and benefit healthcare in rural areas. Graduates have an understanding of tropical science. A degree from JCU medical school not only prepares you to meet the medical needs of northern Australia’s population but graduates go on to fulfil their dream careers all over Australia and beyond.

The degree is intended primarily or school leavers who are categorised as students who have completed Year 12 or equivalent in the last 2 years. However, a limited number of places are available for non-school leavers. When selecting student for their degree JCU does NOT use the UCAT. You may be eligible to join the honours programme for the final 2 years of the MBBS course – this provides training in research skills and independent research.

Local area The Townsville Campus is located on a 386 – hectare natural bush and parkland setting, only 8 miles away from the cities centre. Townsville itself if a gateway to the Wet tropics, Queensland outland and the Great Barrier Reef. Visit Castle Hill monolith, the Museum of Tropical Queensland or Townsville’s aquarium. What better way to destress as a medical student then visiting the Billabong Sanctuary to cuddle a koala or wombat. With over 1,4000 students living on campus there is a great community spirit on campus. With bars, libraries, cafes, sporting facilities and teaching and research facilities everything you could want is accessible on campus.
Social life There are 13,000 students studying at JCU Townsville. The international student community makes up 12% of the community giving the campus a cosmopolitan feel. The JCU Student association have got you covered when it comes to organising social events and societies to join. With excellent sporting facilities on campus. On Campus there is a number of sports facilities including a gynamsium, basketball, tennis, squash, netball courts; rugby, hockey, cricket and soccer fields and a swimming pool.

Interview style Interviews are given out based on a combination of factors. The selection process considers both your academic performance and your written application. Students must submit a JCU internal application form- they are then ranked using this. The form involves answering the following 3 questions: 1. Why do you to become a dental or medical practitioner? 2. Tell us why you are interested in a course where important themes are indigenous and tropical health and rural, remote medicine? 3. Provide details of any activities( paid employment, work experience or voluntary) you have undertaken in addition to your studies which indicate your motivation to study medicine or dentistry at James Cook University.
