Melbourne Medical school offers a Graduate entry, 4-year, full time Doctor of Medicine degree. The University of Melbourne was the first Australian medical school to offer a medical degree at master’s levels. The degree was formulated and launched for students who have completed an undergraduate degree and wish to begin a medical career.

Study opportunities and locations for medical students

Most commonly, the degree is delivered at Parkville Campus. Students with an interest in rural health have the opportunity to conduct their 4 years of study in rural Victoria.

Clinical placements take place in major institutions such as Royal Melbourne, St Vincent’s, and Austin Hospital.

The University is partnered with several leading medical research institutions. Students will be exposed to research in up-and-coming fields. Current major projects involve research into the following areas: cancer, neuroscience and infectious diseases.

The curriculum at the University of Melbourne

The curriculum is based around educating students in the art and science of medicine. Year 1 is taught using a case-based learning approach. The emphasis is primarily on the basic sciences and their application to patients. Students learn bioscience, clinical skills and communication, professional skills, and population health. The remainder of the course involves learning in a clinical context where students are closely engaged with colleagues in a hospital-based clinical school. Students are facilitated to develop clinical skills and knowledge by talking to patients, examining patients, and contributing to their care.

Selection Criteria at the University of Melbourne

Students are selected for interview based upon their GPA and GAMSAT/ MCAT ranking. Offers are made based on the following criteria using the following weightings:

  • Prior Academic performance – 25%
  • GAMSAT/MCAT – 25%
  • Interview – 50%

Prior academic performance is assessed using a Grade Point Average. This grading system is based on performance during the last 3 years of the applicant’s undergraduate studies. Calculations take into consideration results from the final 3 years of a student’s studies, studies completed three years ago are weighted in  a 1:2:2 ratio compared to results gained in the last 2 years.

The medical school offer a guaranteed full-fee pathway. Students must have received an average ATAR between 99.0 and 99.85 in year 12. In additions applicants must have commenced and completed an undergraduate degree at the University of Melbourne and achieve a weighted average of 75% of higher. MMI performance must also be adequate.
