UCAT Conversion Table

Use This 2022 UCAT ANZ Conversion Table to Make Sense of Your Raw Scores

The UCAT is a clinical aptitude test required by most universities in Australia and New Zealand for entry into medicine and certain other health-related degrees. It comprises five subsections, four of which contribute to an overall scaled score.

We know that it can be confusing to wrap your head around how raw scores for each UCAT subsection translate into scaled scores. To help you understand what your scaled UCAT 2022 score might look like, our team has constructed a UCAT raw score to scaled score conversion table. This is useful as you can use your total scaled score to determine your UCAT 2022 percentile and assess how likely you are to receive a medical school interview invitation.

Your raw UCAT scores are converted into scaled scores to determine your percentile

What Is The UCAT and How Is It Scored?

The UCAT is a computer-based aptitude test that examines cognitive attitudes, abilities and behaviours. It consists of five sections: Verbal Reasoning (VR), Quantitative Reasoning (QR), Abstract Reasoning (AR), Decision Making (DM) and Situational Judgment (SJT). To read more about what each of these sections entail, please see our guide to undergraduate ANZ medical schools

The UCAT assess cognitive abilities

Your raw scores in the first four UCAT sections (VR, QR, AR and DM) are converted into scaled scores ranging from 300-900. These four sections are known as the ‘cognitive’ sections of the UCAT and are combined together to form an overall scaled score ranging from 1200-3600. This overall score is used to calculate your UCAT ANZ percentile and tells you where you ranked compared to your test-taking cohort. Your raw SJT score will also be converted into a scaled score ranging from 300-900; however, most medical schools do not consider SJT when determining which applicants will receive an invitation to interview. SJT is usually considered only in cases where universities need to distinguish between students possessing identical overall UCAT scores.

What Is My UCAT Scaled Score?

Each of your raw UCAT 2022 subsection scores can be converted into scaled scores ranging from 300-900. Although official UCAT score conversion tables are not released, our team of experts has analysed historical UCAT data and statistics to create a 2022 UCAT raw score to scaled score conversion table.

The score you receive in each of the four cognitive sections of the UCAT ANZ will be combined to form an overall scaled score.

What Is a Good UCAT Score?

Medical schools use the UCAT, in addition to your ATAR or equivalent, to distinguish between top students and determine who they should invite to interview. For example, the University of New South Wales (UNSW) states on their website that “interviews are offered based on your selection rank and UCAT ANZ overall score.”

Universities use the UCAT ANZ to decide which applicants they should interview

In general, a good UCAT score will be one that is above average. According to UCAT ANZ 2021 statistics, the average overall scaled UCAT score was 2537.581. Therefore, a competitive UCAT score would be one that is presumably over 2540. If you would like more specific details on how you performed compared to the rest of your test-taking cohort, refer to our UCAT ANZ 2022 percentile calculator

FAQs

→ What is a good UCAT score?

A good UCAT score will depend on the individual university’s requirements and the competitiveness of the applicant pool. In general, a score above 2800 is considered competitive for most universities, while a score above 3000 is considered very competitive.

→ How are UCAT scores converted?

UCAT scores are converted into a scaled score that ranges from 300 to 900 for each of the four sections (Verbal Reasoning, Decision Making, Quantitative Reasoning, and Abstract Reasoning) and an overall score that ranges from 1200 to 3600. The conversion process takes into account the difficulty of the questions and the performance of the test takers.

→ What percentile is my UCAT score?

The percentile of a UCAT score will depend on the score itself and the distribution of scores in the applicant pool for that year. In 2022, the 50th percentile score was around 2480, while the 90th percentile score was around 3020.

→ What is the minimum UCAT score for medicine?

The minimum UCAT score required for medicine will depend on the individual university’s requirements. Some universities may have a minimum threshold for each section of the test, while others may use a cutoff score for the overall score. It’s important to check with the specific university you are interested in for their minimum score requirements.

→ What is the average UCAT score 2022?

In 2022, the average UCAT score was around 2500, which is similar to previous years. However, the average score can vary depending on the applicant pool and the difficulty of the test in a given year.
