GAMSAT FAQs

GAMSAT FAQs cartoon

The GAMSAT is a long and mysterious exam so you probably have a few questions! Here are some of the most frequently asked questions. If you’re still unsure of anything, please feel free to leave a comment/ question below.

Do I need to prepare?

Yes. GAMSAT Preparation is absolutely key, there are 3 different sections and each requires a different set of skills. Becoming familiar with the content and the style of questions will help to build your confidence and allow you to relax a little more on the day of the exam. Preparation is also the best way to ensure you achieve a great grade.

When should I start preparing?

The amount of preparation time required varies for each student. It’ll depend on your current level of knowledge and the time you have available. Depending on your background, you may find certain sections easier than others. Make a plan and work out realistically how much time you can dedicate to studying for the GAMSAT, if you are in full time employment/ education you may only have a few hours to spare each week and may need to start earlier. The general consensus is that students should start preparing 3 – 6 months prior to the GAMSAT and spend 2 – 3 hours per day. But as mentioned, this will totally depend on your existing knowledge. We recommend, on average, 3-6 hours/day for 3-6 months.

Do I need a science background to do the GAMSAT?

No. A science background certainly has its advantages for tackling section 3 but it is not essential. If you have a humanities background, you may find sections 1 and 2 easier. The recommended standard for the science topics is year 12/ 1st year undergraduate. Don’t stress if you haven’t studied science previously, just make sure to start preparing early. There are plenty of resources out there to help, here’s a link to our best-rated. If you want additional help, tutoring can be a great way to succeed at science. Check out the available options we have.

What level of knowledge is required for the GAMSAT?

This is a controversial topic! It is said that the level of biology and chemistry necessary is 1st year of university and year 12 standard for physics. However the questions within the GAMSAT Acer papers are more similar to year 12 standard for all disciplines.

What resources should I use?

There is an overwhelming amount of resources available so it can be hard to know which ones to choose. Check out our article on the best-rated resources for more information. And if you’re considering tutoring, please get in touch!

Is it true I need 1st year undergraduate standard maths?

There’s a myth that advanced maths is required for the GAMSAT but the truth is that the main struggle is due to not being able to use a calculator. You’ll need to revise basic mental maths principles such as adding and subtracting fractions. Logs and exponents also feature within section 3 so make sure to look over the rules of these. As you practice questions you’ll pick up tricks to help your mental maths such as rounding up/ down. Our tutors will be able to help you with this and get your basic maths back on track!

How can tutoring help me?

Tutoring can be great at any stage of your preparation, whether you’re starting off with no prior knowledge, or achieved a high ATAR rank. Our tutors can help to teach you core concepts and work on any areas of weakness to ensure top marks.
